Shrek Forever After grossed a series low $239 million domestic in 2010, but still earned over $750 million worldwide to bring the Shrek series total box office to $2.9 billion.  For DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, that's cause to take a break but not give up the golden goose forever (no matter what this Blu-ray box set impiles).  In an upcoming interview with Fox Business Network [via Variety], Katzenberg remarked: “We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest.  But I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series.  We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.” The next chapter could be a television special like 2007's Shrek the Halls, but I expect to see another Shrek movie in my lifetime, if only to reach $3 billion.  More Shrek news after the jump. Variety also reports that DreamWorks and Merlin Entertainment will build a visitor attraction called Shrek's Far Far Away Adventure: Shrek's Far Far Away Adventure will open in Summer 2015 in London. The 20,000 square-foot attraction will be located at County Hall on the south bank of the River Thames. DreamWorks Animation will write a new interactive adventure with Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and other characters from the franchise. There will also be a "character courtyard" where visitors can meet the Shrek characters along with characters from other DreamWorks properties like Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon. Katzenberg said: “We’re excited to work with Merlin to build something that we ...

Bret Easton Ellis and Rob Zombie are teaming up with Alcon Television to develop a limited series about the Manson Family murders in August 1969.  Zombie remarked: “I have been obsessed with this insane story since I was a kid, so obviously I jumped at the chance to be involved in this incredible project.  After speaking with Bret, I immediately realized that we shared the same vision for this epic madness." The project is in the very early stages of development at Fox.  Should Fox greenlight the multipart series, Ellis will write the script and some additional materials.  Zombie will direct.  More after the jump. Variety reports Ellis will turn to the original historical records to "tell converging stories of people and events leading up to and after the murders, from shifting points of view." CNN lays out the timeline for the murders: August 8-9, 1969 - At Manson's command, a small group of his most ardent followers brutally murder five people at the Benedict Canyon home of director Roman Polanski, near Hollywood. The victims are Polanski's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, writer Wojciech Frykowski, coffee heiress Abigail Folger and celebrity hair stylist Jay Sebring. Also killed is Steven Parent, who was a friend of the family's gardener. The murders are committed by followers Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel. Linda Kasabian accompanies them as a lookout. August 9-10, 1969 - Manson, displeased at the sloppiness of the previous night's murders, accompanies a group of followers on a search for victims. In the car are: ...

New MUPPETS MOST WANTED Posters Parody James Bond, FACE/OFF, and TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY

As you would expect from the Muppets, the Muppets Most Wanted marketing campaign satirizes Hollywood's marketing cliches.  A new set of international posters follows suit and parodies posters for Skyfall, The World Is Not Enough, Face/Off, and (surprisingly, wonderfully) Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.  There are naturally some fun fake titles (Animal Piggy Frog Spy) and clever redesigns, but all I need is Kermit's finger guns. Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, and Tina Fey star alongside the Muppets in the sequel directed by James Bobin.  Muppets Most Wanted opens March 21.  Check out the posters after the break. Official synopsis: Disney's "Muppets Most Wanted" takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe's most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World's Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, a.k.a. Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon. Exclusive SABOTAGE TV Spot: Arnold Schwarzenegger Is the “Cartel’s Most Wanted Man”

We have an exclusive TV spot for Sabotage, the latest from writer/director David Ayer (End of Watch).  The voiceover tells most of what you need to know: "When he arrested the world's most wanted druglord, he became the cartel's most wanted man."  The hail of gunfire fills in the rest.  Arnold Schwarzenegger, Olivia Williams, Mireille Enos, Sam Worthington, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Joe Manganiello, Max Martini, and Josh Holloway star.  Sabotage opens March 28.  Watch the TV spot after the jump. Between gunfights, the script by Ayer and Skip Woods (A Good Day to Die Hard) is based on the Agatha Christie mystery novel And Then There Were None.  Here's the official synopsis: In "Sabotage", Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite DEA task force that takes on the world's deadliest drug cartels. When the team successfully executes a high-stakes raid on a cartel safe house, they think their work is done - until, one-by-one, the team members mysteriously start to be eliminated.  As the body count rises, everyone is a suspect.

Jason Sudeikis Is Fletch in FLETCH WON; Ed Helms to Star in EPIC FAIL

A couple of comic casting bits to close out the night: Jason Sudeikis is in talks to take over where Chevy Chase left off in Fletch Won, the long-gestating reboot of the Fletch series.  Naturally, Warner Bros. sees this as the first of a potential comedy franchise about the investigative reporter. Ed Helms is attached to star in Epic Fail, a comedy about a "highly unorthodox special forces team."  Helms developed the original idea with Nicky Weinstock for Lionsgate. More on both projects after the jump. Chase starred in two Fletch movies in the 80s, adapted from Gregory McDonald's mystery novels.  No sequel came to fruition in the 90s despite some chatter.  Kevin Smith came on board for a proposed 2004 shoot and threw out names like Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Jimmy Fallon, and Adam Sandler, but that fell through.  Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence followed and wanted Zach Braff as Fletch, but again, no dice. Several writers and many drafts later, Warner Bros. finally found a version they like, submitted by David List.  The new take is described as a "gritty action comedy with heart."  THR says Fletch Won will be an origin story closer to McDonald's books than Chase's movies.  McDonald's Fletch Won is a prequel that sees Fletch as a fledgling reporter when he stumbles into his first criminal investigation, the murder of a millionaire lawyer.  I can't speak to the difference between the books and the movies, but if Chase's portrayal is a decent representation, the wry Sudeikis is a great ...

Production crews from around the world have posted photos to Slates for Sarah, a Facebook page devoted to Sarah Jones, the camera assistant who died in an accident on set in February.  It's a cool tribute to raise awareness about safety on film sets.  Earlier today, the cast and crew of NBC's Constantine pilot uploaded a photo from the Atlanta set.  The sweet gesture also gives us our first look at Matt Ryan in costume as Constantine, the "enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond."  Tie, trench coat, messy hair: he looks the part. Neil Marshall (The Descent) is directing the pilot from a script by Daniel Cerone (The Mentalist).  Cerone developed the story with David S. Goyer (Man of Steel).  Check out two images after the jump. [Update: We've added an official promo image and press notes] Via Slates for Sarah: Here are press notes via NBC: As production begins on the new pilot CONSTANTINE — from executive producers Daniel Cerone & David S. Goyer and director Neil Marshall — NBC, Warner Bros. 20th Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios are teaming up for a Peanuts movie due November 2015.  Craig Schulz, son of the late Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, remarked, "It's long overdue.  The fans have been asking for a long time, but we held off until the time was right."  Schulz will produce the first Peanuts feature adaptation since 1980 with son Bryan Schulz, Paul Feig (The Heat), Michael J. Travers (Epic), and Cornelius Uliano.  Steve Martino (Ice Age: Continental Drift) will direct from a script by Craig Schulz, Bryan Schulz, and Uliano. Check out the first two images from the production after the jump plus comments from the filmmakers on protecting the legacy, embracing 3D CGI, and visiting Snoopy's fantasy world. Following up on the belief that now is the right time for a new Peanuts movie, Craig Schulz hopes to put any doubts to rest in the USA Today feature: "I'm way more protective than my father would have been.  Our No. 1 goal was always to be authentic to his work and legacy." Regarding the plot, Schulz only noted, "It's about a round-headed kid and his dog, and that's about as far as I'm willing to go."  But a few details surfaced: Charlie Brown's lifelong crush the "Little Red-Haired Girl" will make an appearance. Martino says the detailed animation will show that "Snoopy has soft-white fur." "We're going to fly with Snoopy in his fantasy world.  We have a bigger canvas.  Bill Melendez got Snoopy off the ground in the TV specials.  We're ...

First Trailer THE MAZE RUNNER Starring Dylan O’Brien

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Wes Ball's adaptation of The Maze Runner after premiering it during the latest episode of Teen Wolf.  The story centers on a group of teens who appear in an area known as “The Glade” but have no memory when they wake up.  The only way out appears to be through a shifting maze of massive walls that harbor dangerous creatures known as Grievers.  Only one of the teens, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), holds the secret to their escape.  I am very intrigued by the premise and I am impressed by the visuals teased in the trailer.  The giant maze is menacing but worn---futuristic once the future has come and gone. Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, and Patricia Clarkson also star in the adaptation of James Dashner's young adult novel.  The Maze Runner opens September 19.  Watch the trailer after the break. Here's the official synopsis for The Maze Runner: Based on the young-adult novel by James Dashner, “The Maze Runner” centers around teen Thomas (O’Brien), who awakens in a rusty elevator with no memory of who he is. What he does come to find out is that he’s been delivered to the middle of an intricate maze, along with a slew of other boys, who have been trying to find their way out of the ever-changing labyrinth — all the while establishing a functioning society within the enclosure they’ve come to call “The Glade.”

Warner Bros. has optioned the biography Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkeley, written by Jeffrey Spivak.  THR reports Ryan Gosling and Marc Platt (Drive) will produce.  They are developing the project as a starring vehicle for Gosling to play the iconic musical director/choreographer.  Gosling may even direct the biopic---triple threat!  However, the project is still in the early stages, so the search is on for a writer.  Gosling recently wrapped production on his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster, which Platt produced. Hit the jump for more on Berkeley's biography and a sampling of his elaborate musical production numbers. Here's the synopsis for Buzz: Characterized by grandiose song-and-dance numbers featuring ornate geometric patterns and mimicked in many modern films, Busby Berkeley's unique artistry is as recognizable and striking as ever. From his years on Broadway to the director's chair, Berkeley is notorious for his inventiveness and signature style. Through sensational films like 42nd Street (1933), Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), Footlight Parade (1933), and Dames (1934), Berkeley sought to distract audiences from the troubles of the Great Depression. Although his bold technique is familiar to millions of moviegoers, Berkeley's life remains a mystery. Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkeley is a telling portrait of the filmmaker who revolutionized the musical and changed the world of choreography. Berkeley pioneered many conventions still in use today, including the famous "parade of faces" technique, which lends an identity to each anonymous performer in a close-up. After an early renewal for The Blacklist in December, NBC has officially renewed four more scripted series. NBC executive Robert Greenblatt all but promised Parks and Recreation would get a seventh season back in January.  But there was no official announcement until tonight's press release matter-of-factly mentioned Parks as "previously picked up." Grimm is a reliable performer as the top scripted broadcast series on Friday nights, so NBC will bring it back for a fourth season. The network renewed Chicago Fire for a third season and spinoff Chicago P.D. for a second season. Read the press release after the break. UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif — March 19, 2014 — NBC has announced it is renewing dramas “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.” and “Grimm” for the 2014-15 season. The network previously picked up “The Blacklist” (season 2) “Parks and Recreation” (season 7), “The Voice” (season 7), “Celebrity Apprentice” (season 14) and “The Biggest Loser” (season 16). NBC is winning the season in adults 18-49, and ranked #1 for the first time in 10 years this late in the season. The network is up 20% versus one year ago, with its highest rating 25 weeks into the season in six years. Following the success of “Chicago Fire” last year, Emmy Award-winning producer Dick Wolf’s idea to build a second franchise in Chicago has become a reality with the renewal of mid-season success “Chicago P.D.” Both shows share the same creators and producers making it easy for characters and storylines to occasionally crossover seamlessly from one show to the other. ...

PlayStation Network Developing Comic Adaptation POWERS as First Original Series

Sony Pictures Television developed a pilot for a series adaptation of the Brian Michael Bendis comic book Powers for FX, but FX declined to pick up the series.  Sony could not place this property on a traditional network, so the studio decided to try a new outlet.  Variety reports Sony Pictures Television will produce 10 episodes of Powers with a new cast to premiere on Sony's PlayStation Network.  Gamers can currently rent and buy movies and TV shows on their console, but this will be PlayStation's first original series.  Sony claims 150 million registered accounts on PlayStation Network, so I am curious to see if PlayStation---not to mention Amazon and Hulu---can become the next major home for original content on the heels of Netflix's evolution into an Emmy contender. Charlie Huston scripted the new pilot for PlayStation.  Bendis and Huston are the showrunners, producing alongside Powers artist Michael Avon Oeming, Michael Dinner (Justified), and Remi Aubuchon (Falling Skies).  Hit the jump for background on the comics. Here's the synopsis for Powers Vol. 1: Who Killed Retro Girl?, a collection of the first six issues: Heroes glide through the sky on lightning bolts and fire. Andy Serkis to Direct THE JUNGLE BOOK for Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. and Disney are developing competing live-action adaptations of The Jungle Book.  When director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel) departed the WB project and Idris Elba signed on to voice Shere Khan in the Jon Faverau edition, Disney took the early lead.  But Warner Bros. is not ready to throw in the towel just yet.  After sending out feelers to Ron Howard, WB found their director in Andy Serkis.  Serkis is best known as the godfather of motion-capture acting, the man behind Gollum of Lord of the Rings and Caesar of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  The Jungle Book will be Serkis' feature directorial debut (depending on the status of his Animal Farm adaptation), but he served as the second unit director for The Hobbit movies—no walk in the park. In Rudyard Kipling's short stories, the orphaned boy Mowgli is raised by wolves, befriends Baloo the bear and Bagheera the black panther, and fights the tiger Shere Khan, so there are plenty of CG/mo-cap characters for Serkis to curate.  More after the jump. According to Heat Vision, Callie Kloves' script sticks close to the source material and strives to "explore life and death issues and be true-to-life in portraying animal behavior."  Kipling's work is darker than the 1967 Disney cartoon musical.  Here's the synopsis: The story of the man-cub Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, guided by his mentors Baloo the bear, Bagheera the black panther and the ancient python Kaa, and who confronts his arch-enemy Shere ...

20th Century Fox announced a bunch of release dates tonight: The Fantastic Four reboot is still casting for a 2015 release, but Fox is ready to plan The Fantastic Four 2 for July 14, 2017. The sequel to The Wolverine hits theaters March 3, 2017. [Update: Deadline reports that Fox has set David James Kelly to pen the sequel, which returns James Mangold to the helm with Hugh Jackman starring.] An untitled Marvel film is scheduled for July 13, 2018. Liam Neeson returns for Taken 3 on January 9, 2015. An unspecified Ridley Scott feature is dated for March 4, 2016. Matthew Vaughn's The Secret Service (now October 24, 2014) and an untitled Vince Vaughn vehicle (now March 6, 2015) switched release dates. Frankenstein starring Daniel Radcliffe is pushed back from January 16, 2015 to October 2, 2015. More on the Marvel stuff after the jump. It was reported last year that Fox recruited X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg to create a superhero movie universe in the vein of the Marvel Studio line that led to The Avengers.  Fox has the movie rights for two major Marvel properties: X-Men and Fantastic Four. The untitled 2018 Fox/Marvel movie could draw from X-Men or Fantastic Four---either a direct sequel or spinoff films.  (Maybe the studio wants to revisit Deadpool or a Silver Surfer standalone movie?)  Heat Vision suggests it could be an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover in the report on release dates.  After all, a crossover on that scale would be the ultimate goal of a Marvel-style universe with the Fox-owned characters.
